Able seaman William Rothwell served on board the SS City of Paris which was torpedoed by a German submarine off Nice, France, en route to Marseille and Liverpool. All 122 crew and passengers were killed. Born in Maghull, William of ‘Holden Cottages’ on Southport Road, was the son of William and Alice Rothwell. He is commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial, London.
